Newsletter #02: Things are heating up

Welcome to the second monthly-ish newsletter from Practice, a startup helping people make joy from their creative hobbies.

Things have been heating up in the past month here in Practice land—lots of progress and a literal heat wave.

What’s New

We have been honing our pitch deck for a while now, but this month we took time to put pen-to-paper (actually, fingers-to-keyboard) to write a memo all about Practice. We’d love your feedback. Email info@practicemaking.com if you’d like to give it a read and we’ll send it over.

We’re making progress on our initial release, thanks to the work of an engineering friend who is the true MVP! We’re starting with an iOS app that supports activity tracking and a feed (hobby matching will follow soon after). We hope to launch it soon-ish! Join our waitlist—if you haven’t already—to get notified as soon as we’re ready for folks to give it a try.

One of the great things about starting a company is that you have a reason to connect with really interesting people. We’ve had some great luck with people saying “yes” recently, and had a super exciting follow-up conversation with a potential advisor that we are still feeling hyped about! We hope to have more concrete news to share about this soon. But in the meantime, cross your fingers for us!

We took some serious notes on Raising a seed round 101

Have you ever found something at the perfect time? This is what happened when we stumbled upon Raising a seed round 101 by Terrence Rohan and Jack Altman. It is a comprehensive resource for startup founders exploring fundraising.

Among many things, it inspired us to write our memo (have you heard we wrote a memo? ), adjust our estimated runway timeline and buffer, and help us get more ready for whatever we decide to do re: funding. Definitely worth the read!

We loved this heartfelt review of a miniature kit

Kathryn Rath’s review of a 1:24 scale coffee shop kit on Wirecutter totally caught us off guard. She goes beyond describing the kit and vulnerably shares about how constructing it made her feel, sharing that “I was never one to appreciate the journey, but as I carefully glued all of my disparate furniture pieces into place, and a coffee shop materialized before me, it dawned on me that every small step was a part of something greater. Ultimately, this crafting experience forced me to be present, and that’s where my healing finally began.”

It’s a brief, yet touching, piece. You should check it out.
